(IWUSP)
The International Working Union of Socialist Parties, also known as the Vienna Union and by Vladimir Ilich Lenin as the “two-and-half International,” was an organization founded in 1921 to facilitate the cooperation of socialist groups. Under secretary Max Adler, the union brought together, among others, the Austrian Social Democratic Party, the French Socialist Party and the German Social Democratic Party to offer an alternative to orthodox Marxism. In May 1923, with disputes rife, many union members split to form the Labor and Socialist International along with former affiliates of the Second International. Battered by the onslaught of fascism and the heavy influence on the left of the Third International, the IWUSP gradually became obsolete and was succeeded with the 1951 creation of the Socialist International.
